Off the Mat w/ Marcy: Barefoot Moments

The other morning, I wandered outside barefoot. Soaking in the early morning quietness, the sun’s rays gently peeked between the clouds. A cloud covered sunrise shimmered across the horizon, I strolled onto the empty beach. No umbrellas, colorful towels or playful children running and squealing with excitement. Alone, it’s vastness, it doesn’t feel lonely. Instead there’s a serene feeling of tranquility. The gentle waves breaking along the shoreline lured me closer. Slowly, I made my way to the water’s edge. Drawn by the gentle pull the ocean always has on me. My feet sink into the cool, damp sand, I felt the Earth receive me—no resistance, no rush. Just the steady rhythm of the waves, the gentle grit of sand between my toes, and the distant call of seagulls flying nearby. For a few precious moments, I wasn’t thinking about anything. I was simply here. Fully present. Fully connected.
There’s something so healing about being barefoot on the Earth. I’ve always known it instinctively, but after recently reading Earthing by co-authors Clinton Ober, Stephen Sinatra, M.D. and Martin Zucker. I understand now that this experience is more than just peaceful—it’s powerful.
According to Ober, and the growing body of research around grounding, reconnecting our bodies with the Earth's surface has many benefits. It can reduce inflammation, improve sleep, lessen chronic pain, lower stress levels, and even help balance cortisol levels. The Earth carries a natural, subtle electric charge. When we make direct contact—skin to soil, sand, or grass—it helps reset our internal electrical systems, like plugging back into our natural power source.
This idea of grounding isn’t just physical—it’s energetic, emotional, and spiritual. In yoga, we often talk about being grounded as a way of finding steadiness, presence, and trust in our own being. Through practices like standing poses, breathwork, and meditation, we root into the moment and into ourselves. We bring awareness down from the racing mind into the solid, reliable support of the body and the breath.
Whether I’m walking barefoot on the beach or moving mindfully on my yoga mat, grounding reminds me that I’m supported. That I belong here. That the Earth is always beneath me, steady and generous. And when life feels busy, uncertain, or overwhelming—as it so often does—simply coming back to that truth can be the most powerful practice of all.
So this month, I invite you to step outside barefoot. Or place your hands on the Earth. Feel your feet on your mat. Let yourself be held. Come home to the ground—and to yourself. Seasoned Life Yoga offers many opportunities to help you feel grounded.
