Off the Mat w/ Marcy: Flexibility Blooms

Marcy Kelly | APR 9

When someone finds out I teach yoga often one of the first things they share is that they’re not flexible or can’t touch their toes.  With a smile, I usually respond that toe touching or bending like a pretzel isn’t a prerequisite to practice yoga.  This spring, I’ve been reflecting on the idea of flexibility.  Not just the flexibility we work towards on the mat, but the kind we live with every day.

Recently, I found myself holding tightly to a plan. You know the kind… everything’s mapped out in my mind, expecting it to go just so. But as life often does, it shifted. A schedule changed and something didn’t go as expected.  I felt that familiar feeling of tension rise.  A feeling of resistance mixed with frustration with a little internal voice quietly saying, “But this isn’t how it was supposed to go.” And then, I paused taking a deep breath.  This pause triggered a swift change in my mindset. What if this is an opportunity to soften instead of tighten?

Flexibility, isn’t just about touching your toes or moving deeper into a pose. It’s about how we respond when life bends us in unexpected ways. It’s about allowing space for change, for growth, and for new possibilities to flourish. So often, especially as women who have spent years caring for others, managing homes, careers, and families, we become incredibly skilled at holding everything together. But sometimes, that strength can turn into rigidity either physically, emotionally, and mentally.

Spring, however, invites something different.  Just as the earth softens after winter, we are invited to soften too. To gently stretch beyond what feels familiar. To loosen our grip and allow a little more ease into our days.

On the mat, flexibility begins with awareness. We don’t force the body instead, we listen. We move slowly, breathing into tight spaces, allowing muscles to lengthen over time. Flexibility in yoga is not about achieving a perfect shape; it’s about creating space. Space in the body, space in the breath, and space in the mind.  And over time, something beautiful happens.  As the body begins to open, so does the way we think and feel. We become more patient. More adaptable. More willing to meet ourselves where we are instead of where we think we should be.  This is the true practice of flexibility where the mind, body, and spirit working together.  This season, I invite you to explore flexibility in new ways with Seasoned Life Yoga.

This Spring, I’m offering something different.  A gentle, retreat-style yoga experience at Star Bright Farm called Bloom & Breathe: The Art of Seasonal Living.  It’s not a vigorous yoga class, and it’s not something you need to “prepare” for. In fact, it’s just the opposite. This 2.5 hour experience designed to meet you exactly where you are.  We’ll move slowly and mindfully with Gentle Yoga. Preparing the body, engaging the senses and learn breath work to help regulate the nervous system.  From there, we’ll settle into Restorative Yoga, fully supported, allowing the body to truly relax. And we’ll close with a Yoga Nidra practice. A guided rest that many of my students lovingly call a “Deep Rest Journey” to help calm the nervous system and bring you into a state of deep ease. It’s a chance to step away from the busyness of daily life and reconnect with yourself, with nature, and with the rhythm of Spring. If you’ve been feeling the pull to slow down, to soften, or to begin again in a gentle way… this may be just what you need.  Space is limited for this intimate, relaxing experience.  Reserve your spot soon.

Star Bright Farm is a beautiful lavender farm with a gorgeous barn market in Northern Baltimore County.  Owned and farmed by the Norman family. The blooming fields and gardens are spectacular. The old barn is inviting.  A sense of homecoming, peace and ease washes over your body with your first inhale as you step onto the property. Yes, I’m in love…and creating a unique seasonal yoga experiences with you in mind. I’m looking forward to seeing you amongst the blooms! Check out their website for details on the events they offer at www.starbright-farm.com

Perhaps this spring, you’d rather put on your hiking boots and meet on the trails for a Spring Yoga Hike. We’ll move, breathe, and connect with nature in a way that feels both grounding and freeing.

Or maybe it’s returning to the yoga mat for the Spring Yoga Season at Ladew Topiary Gardens. (Another "happy place") we'll be surrounded by blooming gardens, fresh air, and the gentle energy of the season. Join a Gentle Meditative Yoga Class next to the koi pond in the of the Iris Garden, a Sunset Yoga Class or introduce your little ones to mindful movement and breath work during a fun Family Yoga Class.  Register at www.ladewgardens.com. Become a Ladew member and receive a big discount to classes all season. All proceeds support the gardens.

And perhaps flexibility isn’t about where you go at all, but how you show up.  Maybe it’s choosing to try something new. Maybe it’s letting go of expectations.  Maybe it’s simply meeting yourself with a little more kindness.  So this month, I invite you to ask yourself.

🌸 Where in my life am I holding on too tightly?

🌸 What might soften if I allowed a little more space?

🌸 How can I practice flexibility? Not only in my body… but in my thoughts and in my heart?

Spring reminds us that growth doesn’t come from force instead it comes from gentle, steady expansion.  May you stretch, soften, and find flexibility blooming this Spring season on and off the mat.
