Off the mat w/ Marcy: Rest is Medicine, Listening Inward

Our holidays were full. Full of laughter, conversation, cooking, gathering, and precious moments with the people I love. And yet, somewhere in the midst of it all, my body began to speak. A migraine here. A knock-you-down cold there. Not as an interruption, but as a message. So I listened.
I slowed my pace, canceled a few things, sipped tea, and allowed myself the rare gift of doing less. I took a week off. Knowing my body needed rest, my voice needed quiet, and my energy needed time to restore. It wasn’t indulgence. It was medicine.
Winter has a way of reminding us that rest isn’t optional, it’s essential. Nature knows this well. The trees are bare. The earth is quiet. The days are shorter, inviting us to turn inward rather than push forward. And yet, January often arrives with an unspoken demand to do more, be better, start fresh before we’ve even had the chance to catch our breath.
What if we begin this new year differently? What if instead of rushing ahead, we paused long enough to listen? I wonder…What has your body been asking for lately? Have you been hearing the whispers or are you waiting until it has to shout? So many of us, who have spent years caring for others, are skilled at overriding our own needs. We push through fatigue. We dismiss discomfort. We tell ourselves we’ll rest later. But the body keeps the score, and eventually, it asks us to pay attention.
This January, I invite you to consider rest as medicine. Not as something earned, but as something necessary. Rest that soothes the nervous system. Rest that strengthens the immune system. Rest that restores clarity, patience, and compassion.
Yoga offers us a gentle pathway back to ourselves during this season. A slow, mindful movement practice. A few intentional breaths. Or simply lying down and allowing the body to be supported during a Deep Rest Journey or a Restorative Yoga class. This is where healing happens not through effort, but through deep, conscious rest.
Listening inward doesn’t require hours of silence or a perfectly quiet mind. Sometimes it’s as simple as asking how am I feeling right now? Or what do I need today, not tomorrow, not next month, but at this moment? As we step into a new year, may we honor the wisdom of Winter. May we trust that slowing down now creates space for clarity and vitality later. And may we remember that caring for ourselves is not separate from living fully. It’s what allows us to fully live.
This January, let rest be your medicine.
Let listening inward be your guide.
I look forward to seeing you on the mat, resting deeply, breathing gently, and beginning the year in a way that truly supports you. Visit www.seasonedlifeyoga.com to see the Winter offerings and register for your free class today. It’s my gift to you. 💗
Until next time, Sweet Friend…just breathe. 💕
