Off the Mat w/ Marcy: Savor the Moment

A dear friend recently celebrated a milestone birthday, and we did something wonderfully simple. We met at our favorite local Indian restaurant. There was no rush. No one glancing at the clock. No checking phones between bites. We lingered over our meal, savoring every flavor, every story, every laugh. Our conversation wandered through years of friendship, family, life changes, and the realization that time seems to move faster with each passing year. At one point, one of us quietly said, "I just wish life would slow down." I smiled because I knew exactly what she meant. Perhaps life doesn't actually slow down. Perhaps we simply become better at savoring it. That conversation stayed with me throughout the month.
This summer has offered so many little reminders to pause and truly notice the moments that often slip by unnoticed. My daughter’s home studying for the Bar Exam. Before long, she'll begin a new chapter. Starting her career, working in an office each day, and perhaps even purchasing her first home. I know this season of having her under the same roof is temporary. So we've been savoring the ordinary. A cup of tea together. A midday snack or swim between study sessions. A quick game during a study break. Simple moments that won't appear on anyone's calendar but somehow become the ones we'll remember most.
Even our blueberry bushes offered a lesson. A few years ago we planted several small bushes with hopes of one day enjoying fresh blueberries. Last summer, the birds beat us to nearly every berry. This year there were just enough for us to enjoy. No bowls overflowing, just enough. As we picked the plump berries, I found myself eating them one at a time. Slowly. Savoring their sweetness. Their warmth from the summer sun. Their rich flavor. Perhaps they tasted so good because there weren't hundreds of them. Perhaps they reminded me that abundance isn't always measured by quantity, but by appreciation.
Summer has a way of inviting us to notice these little gifts. The quiet stillness before sunrise. The lingering glow of a summer sunset. Birdsong drifting through an open window. The gentle hum of a hummingbird visiting the flowers while I sit outside writing these words. The fragrance of lavender blooming at Star Bright Farm. Conversations that continue long after yoga class has ended because no one is quite ready to leave. These are the moments that nourish us.
In yoga, we practice this same kind of awareness. Rather than rushing through a pose, we pause. We notice our breath. We become aware of how our body feels in the present moment. Yoga gently reminds us that life isn't lived in yesterday or tomorrow. It's lived here. In this breath. In this moment. That may be why I love Yoga Nidra so much. During a Deep Rest Journey, we're invited to stop doing and simply experience being. There’s nothing to achieve, nowhere to go, and nothing to cross off a to-do list. Simply find a comfortable place to lie down or recline in your favorite chair. Support yourself with a pillow beneath your head, a blanket over your body, or perhaps an eye pillow to help you settle in. Then allow yourself to simply listen. As your body relaxes and your mind begins to quiet, you may discover what summer has been trying to teach us all along…that life doesn't have to be hurried to be meaningful. Some of our most treasured moments happen when we slow down enough to notice them. The science of Yoga Nidra, also referred to as NSDR (Non Sleep Deep Rest) a term coined by Dr. Andrew Huberman is supported by research. This ancient art of doing nothing is a unique, guided meditation created to naturally relax you. We notice the breath, the body, and the quiet spaces in between allowing a down regulation of the nervous system. Studies have found a thirty-minute practice is equivalent to three hours of deep sleep.
This month, I invite you to savor the season in whatever way speaks to your heart.
Perhaps it's watching the sunrise with your morning coffee or tea. Maybe it's lingering over dinner with a loved one, taking an evening stroll, or enjoying a fresh vegetable straight from the garden. It may be listening to the birds, watching a butterfly or bumblebee dance among the flowers, or taking a quiet moment to simply breathe.
And if you'd like to savor the season together, I'd be delighted to welcome you to one of our summer gatherings. Join me for Gentle Sunset Yoga at Star Bright Farm, where we'll practice among the fragrant lavender fields as the day begins to wind down. Or meet me in the beautiful Iris Garden at Ladew Topiary Gardens, where yoga and nature come together in one of my favorite places to teach.

As we move through these beautiful summer days, my hope is that you'll resist the urge to rush through them. Instead, linger a little longer. Laugh a little louder. Notice the beauty that surrounds you. Hold the hand of someone you love. Look into the eyes of the person you’re talking too. Sit outside beneath the evening sky. Let the warmth of the sun kiss your face. Breathe deeply. Savor the sweetness of this season. And reach out and let me know what you’re savoring. 💗
After all, life isn't measured by how quickly we move through it, but by how fully we embrace the moments that make it beautiful. (Like 31 different bird species serenading us during Sunset Yoga at Star Bright Farm- as per the Merlin Bird ID app.) It was a private concert of Mother Nature’s Symphony of the Birds … ‘A Lavender Sunset.’
Until next time, Sweet Friend…just breathe.💕
