Off the Mat with Marcy: Finding Balance

finding balance

Lately, I’ve been reflecting on balance.  Not just the kind we practice on a yoga mat, but the kind we live with every day.  I often picture life as a wheel. Each spoke represents a different part of our lives nutrition, movement, yoga, sleep, work, learning, relationships, social time, and those quiet moments we so deeply need. When the spokes are relatively even, the wheel rolls along smoothly. Life feels steady. It may not be perfect, but it’s manageable.  But when one spoke becomes too short or too long… when we’re overworking, not sleeping, skipping meals, neglecting movement, or putting ourselves last. Our wheel begins to wobble. We feel it in our bodies.  We feel it in our energy. We feel it in our patience and also in our joy.

I’ve noticed this in my own life. There are seasons when I pour myself into caring for others, teaching, creating, and showing up. While quietly setting aside rest, quiet time, or nourishment. Eventually, my body gently (and sometimes not so gently) lets me know… Something is out of balance. Balance, I’ve learned, isn’t about doing everything equally every day. It’s about awareness. It’s about noticing when something needs a little more attention or perhaps a little less.

This idea of balance shows up beautifully in yoga. When we step into a balance pose, we don’t rush. We root down first. We steady the breath. We wobble, adjust, and sometimes step out and try again. Balance is not static. It’s a constant conversation between effort and ease. As we age, balance becomes even more important not just metaphorically, but physically. Practicing balance helps improve stability, coordination, and confidence. It supports joint health, strengthens muscles, and plays a key role in fall prevention. Balance also teaches patience, focus, and self-trust.

Here’s a simple way you can practice and improve your balance while you’re brushing your teeth. It requires no extra time, unless you don’t brush ;) In the morning, stand in front of your vanity and simply raise your right foot and balance on your left foot as you brush your teeth. In the evening, raise your left foot, balance on your right foot and brush your teeth. With time you can try brushing with the opposite hand. It will challenge your body and improve the brain's neuroplasticity.

On the mat, balance asks us to be present. Off the mat, it asks us to be honest.

So this month, I invite you to gently reflect:

💗 Which spokes of your life feel strong right now?

💗 Which ones might need a little tending?

💗 Where could you soften… or strengthen… to feel more steady?

March reminds us that balance is seasonal. Nature is shifting. Days are lengthening. There’s movement toward growth, but still a need for grounding. Yoga gives us a place to explore that balance safely, kindly, and without judgment.

May this month be an invitation to steady your wheel, one spoke at a time...on the mat, and in your beautiful, ever-changing life.  Please check out the Seasoned Life Yoga offerings at www.seasonedlifeyoga.com and let’s find balance in our lives together.

Until next time Sweet Friend...just breathe. 💕
